Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour, gluten-free flour blend)
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar (or brown sugar, coconut sugar)
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (softened, or coconut oil, vegetable oil)
  • 1 large Egg (or flax egg)
  • 4 cups Sliced apples (peeled and cored, or pears, other seasonal fruits)
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon (or apple pie spice)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt (or sea salt, kosher salt)
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar (for caramel, or brown sugar for a richer flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Heavy cream (or coconut cream for dairy-free)
  • 1/4 cup Butter (or dairy-free butter, margarine)
  • 1/2 tsp Sea salt (or pinch of table salt)
  • Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a slight overhang for easy removal.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the softened butter and sugar until creamy. Add the egg and mix again. Gradually add the flour, salt, and cinnamon, stirring until combined. Press the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust and bake for 15 minutes.
  • While the crust is baking, peel and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with sugar, cinnamon, and salt until evenly coated.
  • Once the crust is done baking, remove it from the oven and add the spiced apples on top of the crust, spreading them evenly.
  • Bake the bars for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the top is golden brown.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar for the caramel. Allow it to melt until it turns a deep amber color. Carefully stir in the cream and butter. Add sea salt to taste.
  • Let the apple bars cool completely in the pan before drizzling with homemade caramel. Cut into squares and serve.
